Feb 20, 2012:  Philmont 2013 Update

Scouts & Parents,

As a reminder, the deadline for reserving your place in our Philmont Trip for 2013 is coming up next week.  If you want to attend Philmont in 2013, I will need a deposit of $100/person by the end of our meeting on Monday February 27, 2012.

The eligibility to attend Philmont is 14 years of age, or completion of 8th grade and at least 13 years of age before attending Philmont.  Therefore, if you will be 14, or if you will have completed 8th grade (and be at least 13), by June 21, 2013 you are eligible to attend Philmont in 2013.  Meaning if you are currently in 7th grade, you are likely to be eligible.

We only have a limited number of openings and Philmont is not available every year, so I highly encourage those with any interest in attending Philmont during their scouting years to sign up as soon as possible.  While our current registered crew43 members will have preference, we will fill the remaining openings on a first come first serve basis.

To ensure your place, please sign up and provide your deposit ($100/person) with either my self or Mr Guay by Feb 27th.  Without your deposit before Feb 27th, we cannot assure your space in this trip.

Regards,

Brian Whitaker

First, if you haven’t scheduled your physical, take care it as soon as you can.  Here is the link for the form: (all four parts A,B,C, & D are required)

http://www.scouting.org/sitecore/content/Home/HealthandSafety/ahmr.aspx

Here is a list of upcoming activities:

Mar/Apr                     Canoe Maneuverability

April 30th                    Local River Trek (single day)

May 21st                      Lake Trek (overnight)

May/June                    BSA Swim Test

June                            Final Meeting

I would like to do the Canoe Maneuverability soon but keeping away from Easter but would like some descent weather (which rules out tomorrow morning).  We could do this at Sharon Woods (I don’t think VOA has canoes but I can check) for about 1-2 hours.   I have a series of marker buoys we can use to set up a slalom course.  Possible dates could be Sunday afternoon 4/17, Good Friday 4/22 (I can pick crew members up if needed) or early evening the week of 4/25.  Which of these options works best? (send me an email)

The next activity is a canoe trip on a local river (Little Miami or Miami Whitewater) for either Saturday April 30th or Sunday April 31st (again send me an email for which day works best)

The following activity is the Lake Trek at Cave Run Lake in Northern Kentucky.  It would be nice if someone could step up and coordinate this.

We still need to do some work to finalize travel plans – the default plan is to rent a van and take it and a support vehicle up.

We also need to finalize any equipment needs.  I’ve ordered the new tents.

Please email me with any questions or suggestions.

March 11, 2011

Beginning next week, we will move our crew business meetings to MONDAYS (7:30 to 8:30 pm) on the first and 3rd weeks of the month.  Our activities on the second and 4th weeks can be other nights – this month we will have our movie night on the 24th at the O’brien’s residence.

Feb 17, 2011:

At the Committee meeting on Sunday, I got the go ahead to spend about $600 on new crew tents.  Our current tents started having vestibule zipper problems last spring and it seems like it has become an epidemic.  While we can continue to tinker with them, I’m concerned about how they would hold up if we were camping in truly bad weather.  I’m looking for a crew adult to take the lead in scouting what options and pricing might be out there.  We’re looking for tents versatile enough to use for both backpacking and fixed site camping (which generally means 2 to 3 person tents – maybe 4 person if light enough) and we tend to like vestibules.

FEB 17, 2011:

For anyone possibly interested in Northern Tier this summer (end of June), we will have a meeting to go over planning details on Sunday February 27th from 3 to 5 pm.
