THE "TRIPLE CROWN" OF HIGH ADVENTURE
To earn your triple crown of high adventure, a scout or crewmember must complete at least one trek at each of BSA's national high adventure out posts.
Sea Base: Seabase is located in the Florida Keys (Key Marathon). It focuses on sailing based high adventures where scouts/crewmembers crew a 50 to 100 foot sailing vessel which sails for 7 to 10 days. During the adventure scouts/crewmembers hoist sails, swab the decks, prepare meals, and yes even scrub the "head". Not to say it is all work and no play as scouts/crewmembers also swim in the warm Florida Keys water, snorkel, go ashore on land based excursions, and of course visit Key West.
Philmont: Philmont is located in the mountains of New Mexico. Philmont focuses on backpacking based high adventures where scouts/crewmembers tackle difficult terrain, carry all equipment & food necessary to complete a 1 to 10 day trek, and backpack between 70 and 120 miles. During their trek, they may use burros, visit a shooting range, pan for gold, climb the "tooth of time", or even climb the highest mountain in the region (Mount Baldy: 12,441 feet high). Perhaps the most physically challenging adventure offered by National, it also comes with its rewards. Scouts/crewmembers learn self reliance, see the wonders of nature up cost, and learn to hang a bear bag.
Northern Tier: Northern Tier is located in the boarder country between northern Minnesota and Canada. Northern Tier focuses on canoeing adventures ranging from 7 to 14 days, during which scouts/crewmembers will canoe from 60 to 120 miles. In this remote wilderness, scouts/crewmembers experience pristine lakes, unique wildlife, and the challenge of isolation. Perhaps the most tranquil of all the adventures, this tranquility can be shattered by 180 rod portages or sudden storms. Scouts/crewmembers completing this adventure are rewarded with seeing nature’s rarest treasures up close.
